Internet technology giant Google is 19 years today
ASKiNG RADiO Senior Reporter, KiNG JAMES YiYE tells how Google has influenced his professional life in the 21st century.
"I'm feeling lucky" that I'm part of this creative and innovative journey for 16 years.
It's difficult to begin, but my first encounter with Google as a search engine was in October 2001 when the company had just marked 3 years of its existence.
The British Council Nigeria had organised training for us young Professionals on using the new technology for research and general improvement of our work.
Princess Anne who is the only daughter of Queen Elizabeth was in Nigeria for the official opening, that was her first visit to Nigeria. I was also in my 2nd year on the job as a Broadcast Journalist, then with Aso Radio 93.5 FM Abuja.
Princess Anne only spent time chatting with me, the youngest trainee, but the reason she did this was because, all but me sat down while chatting with her hands gripped as we discussed.
We were told during the dress rehearsal not to stand upon her arrival but trust Nigerians, they were even bowing to greet the Princess, I was the last person on the row and the only sitting and doing my work on the computer. She must have hurried to meet this boy...
Later, I had my first gmail account, I had had one with Yahoo but after the training, it appeared Google was just the main thing.
Many years down the line, I have been into more Google products including being An App Developer with ASKiNG RADiO Online app on Google Play. We have ASKiNG RADiO YouTube Channel, AdSense with paid Google Ads, Google+ and almost every other Google Products.
21st Century life is almost not complete with Google.
How Google Started.
They say life is full of surprises, and Google’s history is chock-full of them. In fact, we wouldn’t be here without them.
In 1997, one of Google’s co-founders, Larry Page, had just arrived at Stanford University to pursue his P.h.D in computer science. Of all the students on campus, Google’s other co-founder, Sergey Brin, was randomly assigned to show Page around. This chance encounter was the happy surprise that started it all.
From there, the two came together with a common goal in mind: to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful, a mantra that would go on to become Google’s mission statement. The two hunkered down in a garage - Google’s first office - and got to work.
Billions of searches later, perhaps the happiest happenstance has been how Google has grown throughout the past 19 years
Named for the number “googol” (a 1 followed by one hundred zeroes), Google inches closer to its namesake each year, currently serving more than 4.5 billion users in 160 countries speaking 123 languages worldwide
Upon clicking today's Doodle, we invite you to explore 19 surprises we've launched over the past 19 years - including our brand new Search Easter egg: Snake Game! So give it a spin and thanks for celebrating with us!
